Our Top Picks for Summer Activities in Cripple Creek

Our Top Picks for Summer Activities in Cripple Creek

Cripple Creek may be a small town, but it always has big things going on. Every month, there are many different events to be found, making its activity calendar more akin to that of a much bigger city than a historic mining village tucked away in the Rockies. Summer is particularly cool (literally — it’s cooler in the mountains), with sunny, long days allowing everyone to let loose and have a little fun. What’s on the agenda for the months ahead? We’ve got the details right here.

Mysteries at the District Museum

All Summer

Cripple Creek is a gold rush town, so it’s only fitting that visiting the local District Museum, which features historic buildings and artifacts from the town’s bustling mining days, might make you the lucky winner of a half-ounce gold nugget. All you have to do is visit the museum anytime during the summer and solve a set of clues. Once you’ve completed the clues, you’ll be entered for a chance to win. Admission to the museum is $8 for adults, $6 for military and free for kids 12 and under. You can even buy extra entries for a dollar! The drawing is held at the end of August and the end of September. Is there a cooler souvenir than gold? We don’t think so.

World’s Greatest Gold Camp 1892 Historical Tour

All Summer

Every Saturday through September 1, you can take an interactive trolley tour that looks at the town histories of Cripple Creek and Victor. Cruise by the Jail Museum and the Old Homestead House, learn all about gold mining in the region’s past and enjoy glimpses of key historic people during the journey. The tour is run by the Gold Camp Victorian Society and runs at 11 am and 2 pm The tour will run $10 for adults, $5 for kids 12 and under and a family pack costs $30. The tours are 90 minutes long, which means you’ll get a lot of bang for your history-loving buck.

23rd Annual Once Upon a Time in the West Art Show

June 22 – July 5

Here in Colorado, it’s not uncommon to begin important ceremonies with a blessing from a local Native American elder, and our art shows are no different.  On June 23rd from 4 – 9 pm, enjoy our Artists’ Reception at the Cripple Creek Heritage Center.  The Blessing and Smudge Purification Ceremony is at 6 pm, a special element you won’t want to miss.  The art show will be available from 8 am – 5 pm June 22- July 5 and 10% of sales will be donated to the local High School Art Department for continued art education in our little berg.

Donkey Derby Days

June 22 – 24

Cripple Creek is known for its gold mining history, but it’s also known for something a bit more unique — its resident donkey herd. You read that correctly! Donkeys roam the hills of the town and they’ve inspired a decades-long tradition where visitors can enjoy races, a petting zoo, fun games, heritage competitions and the chance to help name the newest baby donkeys. The weekend is totally free with lots of family-friendly activities that make it fun for everyone. And while it may be all about the donkeys, there’s a little nod to man’s best friend with a fabulous dog show complete with prizes.

Fourth of July

July 4th

Nothing is more patriotic than the Fourth of July and what could be better than celebrating it at the base of America’s Mountain? Cripple Creek has been setting the bar for Colorado Fourth of July events for well over 100 years, and like everything in the town, it just gets better with age!  With a pristine mountain backdrop and cooler temperatures, it’s easily one of the most comfortable places to celebrate our great nation. Admission to the event is totally FREE with live music, food vendors, a beer garden, and of course — fireworks!  The oohing and aahing for the magnificent light show starts at 9:30 pm. Your memories of this event? They’ll last forever.

Salute to American Veterans Rally

August 17 – 19

While you’re in the American spirit, join us to salute and celebrate our veterans at our 26th annual Veterans Rally and the 30th Annual POW/MIA Recognition Ride. This is Colorado’s largest procession of motorcycles and a great way to honor the sacrifice of the men and women who have served our country.  We’ll have VIP speakers, a special Veteran’s Poker Run, street vendors and Wild West Gun Fighters.  Be sure to make some time to visit the Vietnam Memorial Wall.  On August 19th, the city will be dedicating The Pikes Peak Region’s Memorial Wall, offering a place to reflect on the sacrifices made by any members of the military, stationed at one of our five area installations, since September 11, 2001.

Wondrous Treasures Gem and Mineral Show

August 24 – 26

If there’s one thing we really know in Cripple Creek, it’s Geology!  We’ve been scratching around in the dirt since before your granddaddy’s granddaddy was born!  Join us for this amazing gem show, featuring special guests from the hit show Prospectors, and a Rock-Hound Expedition!
